As of Sept. 13, 1997, Florida residents have the right to protect personal information in their driver license and motor vehicle records from disclosure. A number of exceptions were specified by law; those individuals/businesses will continue to have access to the data.

To protect your record, print the Request to Withhold Disclosure of Personal Information form, complete it and mail it in.
To purchase a protected record, print the Request For Exempt Personal Information In A Motor Vehicle Record complete it and mail it in.
In 1997, the Florida Legislature passed a bill which allows citizens to protect their personal information on Floridas motor vehicle and driver license data bases. Protected information includes:
- name
- address
- driver license or identification card number
- phone number
- social security number
- medical or disability information
You have two options. You may block access to your record subject to certain exceptions. In addition, you may choose to prevent the release of your information for use in surveys, marketing, or other bulk mailings.
We will block your records based on the information you provide to us. You must provide us your driver license number and the title or license plate numbers for all the vehicles you own, if you want each of those records protected.
No. The law allows individuals or companies in certain circumstances to obtain your information. Those exemptions are for use:
- in matters of motor vehicle or driver safety and theft, emissions, product alterations, recalls or advisories; performance monitoring of motor vehicles and dealers by motor vehicle manufacturers
- by any government agency in carrying out its functions or any private person or entity acting on behalf of a government agency
- in the normal course of business by a legitimate business to verify the accuracy of personal information submitted by an individual or obtain accurate information if such information as submitted was not accurate
- in connection with any filed civil, criminal, administrative, or arbitral proceeding in any court or before any self-regulating body
- in research activities and in producing statistical reports, as long as the personal information is not published, redisclosed or used to contact individuals
- by insurers or insurance support organizations
- in providing notice to the owners of towed or impounded vehicles
- by any licensed private investigative agency or licensed security service
- by an employer or its agent or insurer to obtain or verify information on an individual holding a commercial drivers license required under the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act
- in connection with the operation of private toll transportation facilities
- in connection with bulk distribution of surveys, marketing, or solicitations if you have not chosen to prevent this use
- if the requesting person demonstrates that he or she has obtained the written consent of the person who is the subject of a motor vehicle record
- specifically authorized by state law, if such use is related to the operation of a motor vehicle or public safety.
